Breast Lift Surgery
Breast lift surgery is a procedure to restore sagging breasts to an aesthetic and healthy appearance. This sagging occurs due to factors such as gravity, breastfeeding, frequent weight fluctuations, aging, childbirth, and improper bra usage, as breasts lack muscle and consist of fat and milk glands.
In medical terms, breasts positioned lower than where they should be is called ptosis. In ptosis, breasts sag either due to volume loss or excessive skin loosening. This ultimately causes aesthetic discomfort for women.
Mastopexy refers to the procedure of repositioning the nipple and breast tissue to their proper position without changing breast volume.
Who Can Have Breast Lift Surgery?
Any woman who is over 18 years old and experiencing breast sagging can undergo breast lift surgery, provided there are no issues found during the doctor’s detailed examination and tests.
For those with normal cup sizes, only lifting is performed. However, women with smaller breasts, such as A cup, receive silicone implants during surgery. Fat injection is also an option for those who don’t prefer silicone, though it’s not highly recommended by doctors and requires waiting at least 6 months after the lift surgery.
Will there be Scarring after Breast Lift Surgery?
Although mastopexy is performed purely for aesthetic concerns, it may leave scars similar to breast reduction surgery in some cases. The determining factors are how far below the normal level the nipple is positioned and how much the lower breast tissues sag. If the nipple is 2-3 cm below its ideal position and the lower ptosis is moderate, lifting can be performed without scarring using a method called ‘periareolar mastopexy.’ However, if there is obvious sagging in both the nipple and breast tissue, a straight-line scar from the nipple downward becomes inevitable. Mastopexy surgery shares some similarities with breast reduction surgery. It’s a satisfying procedure in terms of the new breast shape achieved. The post-operative benefits are similar to breast reduction surgery. Primarily, it provides visual improvement. After surgery, patients can wear clothes that suit their body, experience increased self-confidence, and achieve better psychological well-being.
How Long Does Breast Lift Surgery Take?
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 2.5 hours. After surgery, drains are placed in each breast to prevent blood accumulation. A special supportive bra is fitted immediately after surgery. You may be discharged the same day or stay overnight. You can shower three days after surgery, when your dressings will also be changed. The stitches are self-dissolving and hidden, so they don’t need removal. You should wear the supportive bra for 3-6 weeks. After one week, you can return to daily activities and light work. Light exercise can be resumed after two weeks, and strenuous exercise after six weeks.
In some cases, both breast tissue volume loss and sagging may occur. In such situations, breast augmentation and breast lift procedures can be combined to correct the problem (augmentation mastopexy).
Pre and Post-Operative Care for Breast Lift Surgery
Before surgery, evaluations are made through breast ultrasound and mammography. Blood-thinning medications like aspirin should be stopped at least 7 days before surgery. On the day of surgery, patients should wash with appropriate disinfectants and avoid using any cosmetic products. No food or drink should be consumed 6 hours before surgery.
After surgery, compression garments should be worn carefully for 3 weeks, and smoking and alcohol should be avoided. Initial numbness in the breast area is normal and will improve over time.
